Anne of Avonlea, the second novel in L. M. Montgomery’s Anne series, continues the story of Anne Shirley as she enters young adulthood in the close-knit community of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Now sixteen, Anne has set aside her dream of leaving Avonlea to attend college and instead accepts a position as the local schoolteacher, determined to prove herself capable, responsible, and worthy of the trust placed in her. Though older and more disciplined, Anne’s imagination and idealism remain central to her character.
As Anne adapts to her new role, she faces the challenges of guiding a lively classroom, navigating community politics, and earning the respect of parents and colleagues. Her growth is shaped by the influence of friends both old and new, including her steadfast companion Diana Barry and the mischievous twins Davy and Dora Keith, whom Marilla reluctantly agrees to adopt. Davy’s relentless curiosity and talent for trouble provide humor while testing Anne’s patience and sense of authority.
The novel also explores Anne’s deepening connection to Avonlea itself. She becomes involved in efforts to improve and preserve the village, including campaigns to save local landmarks from careless development. Through these experiences, Anne learns that progress requires compromise and that change, while necessary, can be bittersweet.
Romantic undercurrents quietly develop as Anne’s long-standing rivalry with Gilbert Blythe softens into mutual respect and affection, though neither is yet ready to confront these feelings fully. Montgomery balances gentle romance with themes of duty, maturity, and community responsibility.
Anne of Avonlea portrays Anne’s transition from spirited girlhood to thoughtful young womanhood. While her youthful impulsiveness is tempered by experience, her compassion, imagination, and optimism remain intact. The novel offers a tender, humorous reflection on growing up, finding purpose, and learning how to shape one’s ideals to fit the real world without losing one’s sense of wonder.
Quote from the book:
“One can't get over the habit of being a little girl all at once.”
