L. M. Montgomery (1874–1942) was a Canadian author renowned for her novels, essays, short stories, and poetry, beginning in 1908 with the publication of Anne of Green Gables. Over the course of her career, she produced 20 novels, approximately 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays. Anne of Green Gables was an immediate success; its spirited heroine, the orphan Anne Shirley, brought Montgomery international fame during her lifetime and earned her a devoted global readership. Many of Montgomery’s novels are set on Prince Edward Island, and the vivid settings drawn from Canada’s smallest province have become enduring literary landmarks and popular tourist destinations, most notably Green Gables farm, which helped inspire the creation of Prince Edward Island National Park. Montgomery’s literary legacy endures through her widely read and studied novels, diaries, and letters, which continue to engage readers and scholars around the world.
