Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery is a beloved coming-of-age novel set in the rural beauty of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The story follows Anne Shirley, an imaginative, outspoken orphan whose fiery red hair and vivid personality set her apart. Through a mix-up at the train station, Anne is sent to live with aging siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who had intended to adopt a boy to help with farm work at Green Gables. Though initially uncertain, the Cuthberts gradually come to cherish Anne, whose boundless enthusiasm and emotional intensity bring new life to their quiet household.

Anne’s journey centers on her desire for belonging, love, and self-acceptance. Gifted with a rich imagination, she often transforms ordinary moments into dramatic adventures, sometimes leading to humorous or embarrassing mishaps. From accidentally dyeing her hair green to her fierce rivalry with the scholarly Gilbert Blythe, Anne’s experiences at school and in the Avonlea community shape her character and values. Over time, she learns to temper her impulsiveness with responsibility while remaining true to her creative spirit.

The novel explores themes of identity, family, friendship, and the healing power of home. Anne’s relationships—with Marilla, Matthew, Diana Barry, and even her rivals—highlight the importance of empathy, forgiveness, and personal growth. Montgomery’s lyrical descriptions of the natural landscape reflect Anne’s inner world, making the setting an integral part of the story’s emotional resonance.

Ultimately, Anne of Green Gables is a warm and humorous tale that celebrates individuality and resilience. Anne’s transformation from a lonely orphan into a confident young woman captures the universal longing to be understood and loved. Its enduring charm lies in its blend of wit, sentiment, and heartfelt optimism, securing its place as a timeless classic for readers of all ages.
