Anne of the Island, the third novel in L. M. Montgomery’s Anne series, follows Anne Shirley as she leaves the familiar comforts of Avonlea to attend Redmond College on the mainland. For the first time, Anne must navigate life beyond Prince Edward Island, balancing academic ambitions with emotional independence. Though excited by new opportunities, she feels the ache of separation from Green Gables, Marilla, and her beloved home, marking a significant step in her journey toward adulthood.
At Redmond, Anne forms lasting friendships with kindred spirits such as Philippa Gordon, Stella Maynard, and Priscilla Grant, sharing adventures, intellectual pursuits, and dreams of the future. The lively atmosphere of college life challenges Anne to broaden her perspective while remaining true to her values. She takes pride in her academic success, yet struggles with uncertainty, self-doubt, and the changing nature of relationships as she matures.
Central to the novel is Anne’s evolving understanding of love. Her long-standing connection with Gilbert Blythe deepens, though misunderstandings and missed opportunities delay their happiness. Anne experiences heartbreak and loss, learning that growing up often involves painful choices and emotional resilience. These moments of sorrow are balanced by joy, laughter, and the deep comfort of friendship.
Montgomery weaves themes of independence, ambition, and self-discovery throughout the narrative, portraying the transition from girlhood to womanhood with sensitivity and insight. The setting shifts from the rural beauty of Prince Edward Island to the bustling intellectual life of college, reflecting Anne’s expanding world and inner growth.
Anne of the Island is a poignant and reflective novel that captures the excitement and uncertainty of young adulthood. It celebrates friendship, perseverance, and the enduring power of love, while honoring the nostalgia of leaving home and the courage required to embrace change and new beginnings.
Quote from the book:
“I do know my own mind,' protested Anne. 'The trouble is, my mind changes and then I have to get acquainted with it all over again.”
