Cimarron by Edna Ferber is a sweeping historical novel that follows the settlement and development of the American Oklahoma Territory during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The story centers on the ambitious and restless Yancey Cravat and his determined wife, Sabra. After participating in the dramatic Oklahoma Land Rush, the couple settles in the boomtown of Osage, where Yancey pursues journalism, politics, and justice on the frontier. While Yancey’s adventurous spirit often pulls him away, Sabra gradually becomes the true backbone of the community, growing from a traditional frontier wife into a respected businesswoman and civic leader. Through their lives and the lives of those around them, the novel explores themes of frontier hardship, social change, prejudice, and progress. Ferber paints a vivid portrait of the American West transforming from a rough frontier into an organized society.
