Anthony Trollope (1815–1882) was one of Victorian England’s most prolific and enduring novelists. Born in London, he endured a difficult childhood marked by his father’s financial troubles before beginning a career with the British Post Office in 1834. His work took him to Ireland, where he began developing the observations and characters that would inspire his fiction. Trollope achieved literary success with The Warden (1855) and Barchester Towers (1857), launching his celebrated Chronicles of Barsetshire. He later wrote the Palliser novels and such acclaimed works as The Way We Live Now. Trollope famously maintained a disciplined writing routine while continuing his postal career, traveling, hunting, and raising a family. He retired from the Post Office in 1868 and continued writing until his death in London on December 6, 1882.
