Chewana Books presents Giant’s Bread by Mary Westmacott (Agatha Christie).
Giant’s Bread tells the tragic and introspective story of Vernon Deyre, a brilliant yet emotionally complex musician whose extraordinary talent demands profound personal sacrifices. Driven by an uncompromising artistic vision, Deyre must reinvent his identity after being declared dead in WWI. But there is a high price to be paid for his talent, especially by his family and the two women in his life. As he struggles to reconcile his ambition in order to write his life’s masterpiece, he has to make a crucial decision with no time left to count the cost.
As Deyre navigates through a life shaped by family expectations, the upheaval of war, and relationships with two pivotal women, his emotional detachment and obsessive dedication to music increasingly isolate him from those who love him.
The novel explores enduring themes of love, ambition, and the painful price of creative greatness, portraying the inner conflicts of an artist consumed by his work. Rather than relying on suspense or mystery, Giant’s Bread challenges readers through its rich psychological depth, offering a poignant examination of identity, sacrifice, and the lonely pursuit of artistic perfection.
Quote from the book:
“The perfect husband! Perhaps that was because he was an American. You always heard that Americans made perfect husbands.”

Mary Westmacott —
In 1930, Agatha Christie published her first novel under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, Giant’s Bread. Writing under an assumed name allowed her to explore the psychological themes that fascinated her, free from the expectations of her devoted mystery readers. Over time, Christie produced six novels as Westmacott—works that marked a clear departure from her established identity as the “Queen of Crime.” The pseudonym itself was carefully chosen: Mary was Christie’s second given name, and Westmacott belonged to a branch of her extended family. For nearly twenty years, she successfully kept her dual identity a secret, and to her quiet satisfaction, the novels achieved modest success on their own merits.
