Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a haunting novella that explores the moral complexities of imperialism and the depths of human nature. The story follows Charles Marlow, a seasoned sailor, who recounts his journey up the Congo River into the heart of colonial Africa. Tasked with retrieving the enigmatic ivory trader Kurtz, Marlow ventures deeper into a landscape that grows increasingly oppressive and surreal.
As Marlow travels inland, he witnesses the brutal realities of European colonial exploitation, where greed and power have led to widespread suffering and dehumanization. The figure of Kurtz, once an idealistic agent of progress, becomes a symbol of moral collapse, having succumbed to the darkness within himself.
Through rich, atmospheric prose, Conrad examines themes of civilization versus savagery, the fragility of morality, and the psychological toll of isolation. Heart of Darkness remains a powerful and unsettling critique of imperial ambition and a profound meditation on the darkness that lies within all people.
Quote from the book—
“Like a running blaze on a plain, like a flash of lightning in the clouds. We live in the flicker.”
