Inspector French's Greatest Case is a classic Golden Age detective novel that introduces the meticulous Scotland Yard investigator, Inspector Joseph French. The story begins with a shocking crime in London’s Hatton Garden jewelry district, where a trusted employee of a diamond firm is found murdered beside an emptied safe. With valuable gems missing and suspects in every direction, French is assigned what appears to be an impossible case.

Unlike many flamboyant fictional detectives, Inspector French relies on patience, logic, and painstaking attention to detail. He carefully studies railway schedules, shipping routes, coded messages, and financial records while chasing leads across England and continental Europe. As the investigation unfolds, false clues and elaborate disguises complicate the mystery, forcing French to reconstruct the crime piece by piece.

Crofts combines the suspense of a traditional whodunit with the realism of an early police procedural, creating a clever, methodical mystery celebrated for its intricate plotting and atmospheric 1920s setting.

Quote from the book—

“Inspector French felt that somewhere in the chain of facts there existed one small weakness which, if discovered, would bring the whole structure crashing down.”
