Life On The Mississippi is a semi-autobiographical book by Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) The book is part history and part travel writing, while blending in memoirs that detail Twain's experiences as a steamboat pilot before the Civil War and a later journey down the river after the war. The beginning of the book focuses on training and life as a pilot; filled with vivid memories of the river and its colorful characters. The second part is presented as a travelogue reflecting on the changes brought by the railroads and industrialization. On display throughout the book are Twain's signature wit, humor, and keen observations of a bygone era of American life.

Quote-

"When I was a boy, there was but one permanent ambition among my comrades in our village on the west bank of the Mississippi River. That was, to be a steamboatman. We had transient ambitions of other sorts, but they were only transient. When a circus came and went, it left us all burning to become clowns; the first negro minstrel show that came to our section left us all suffering to try that kind of life; now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates. These ambitions faded out, each in its turn; but the ambition to be a steamboatman always remained."
