Lost Face by Jack London is a gripping collection of seven adventure stories set largely in the harsh and unforgiving Yukon and Alaskan wilderness during the Klondike Gold Rush. First published in 1910, the book showcases London’s fascination with survival, human endurance, greed, and the thin line between civilization and savagery. The title story follows a captured adventurer who uses cunning and psychological manipulation in a desperate attempt to escape a horrifying death at the hands of his captors.

Among the collection’s most famous stories is “To Build a Fire,” a chilling tale of a lone traveler battling the deadly Arctic cold, often regarded as one of the greatest survival stories ever written. Other stories explore dangerous river journeys, loyalty between humans and animals, frontier justice, and the pursuit of wealth in a brutal landscape. London combines vivid natural imagery with tense, fast-moving storytelling, creating unforgettable portraits of men and women pushed to their physical and moral limits. Lost Face remains a classic example of early American adventure fiction and Jack London’s rugged literary style.

Quote from the book—

“The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.”

— Jack London, Lost Face
