Mr. Britling Sees It Through is a reflective wartime novel that explores the emotional and intellectual shock experienced in Britain during the early years of the First World War. The story centers on Mr. Britling, a thoughtful and talkative writer living with his family in the English countryside at a home called Matching’s Easy. Before the war, Britling is confident in the progress of civilization and believes that modern reason and diplomacy will prevent large-scale conflict.
When war suddenly erupts across Europe, his comfortable assumptions collapse. Through conversations with friends, the presence of a young American guest, and the gradual involvement of people around him in the war effort, Britling begins to grasp the scale and tragedy of the conflict. The war becomes deeply personal when his own family suffers loss.
Rather than focusing on battles, the novel examines the psychological and moral struggle of ordinary people trying to understand a world at war. In the end, Britling slowly searches for hope, faith, and meaning amid grief and uncertainty.
Quote from the book—
“Until a man has found God and been found by God, he begins at no beginning, and works to no end. He may have friendships, his partial loyalties, his scraps of honor. But all these things fall into place and life falls into place only with God. Only with God. God, who fights through men against Blind Force and Night and Non-Existence; who is the end, who is the meaning. He is the only king.”

H. G. Wells (1866–1946) was an English writer best known as one of the founders of modern science fiction. Born in Bromley, Kent, he came from modest circumstances and won a scholarship to study biology under Thomas Henry Huxley, whose evolutionary ideas deeply influenced his thinking. Wells first achieved fame with a series of imaginative scientific romances, including The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds. Beyond science fiction, Wells wrote novels of social realism, political commentary, and utopian speculation. He was a committed socialist for much of his life and believed literature could help shape a better, more rational world order. His works often explore class conflict, scientific responsibility, and the future of humanity.
