No More Parades is the second novel in Ford Madox Ford’s celebrated Parade’s End tetralogy, continuing the story of Christopher Tietjens during the turmoil of World War I. Set largely behind the front lines in France, the novel examines the bureaucratic machinery of war and the immense strain it places on those responsible for managing it. As an army officer, Christopher struggles to maintain order, fairness, and efficiency amid confusion, incompetence, and the relentless demands of military life.
At the same time, his personal life remains deeply troubled. His estranged wife, Sylvia, continues to exert a powerful influence over him, while his feelings for Valentine Wannop offer a distant hope of happiness. Torn between duty and desire, Christopher remains committed to a code of honor that increasingly seems out of place in a world transformed by conflict.
Rather than focusing on battlefield heroics, No More Parades presents a thoughtful and realistic portrait of war’s psychological and social consequences. Through rich characterization and subtle insight, Ford explores the collapse of old certainties and the challenges of preserving dignity in an age of upheaval.
