Payment Deferred by C. S. Forester is a gripping psychological crime novel first published in 1926. Unlike a traditional mystery, the novel reveals the identity of the murderer from the very beginning and instead focuses on the devastating emotional and moral consequences of the crime.

The story follows William Marble, a struggling London bank clerk burdened by debt and financial insecurity. When his wealthy nephew unexpectedly arrives carrying a large sum of money, Marble succumbs to temptation and commits a shocking act of murder. Believing that newfound wealth will solve all his problems, he uses the stolen money to improve his circumstances and secure a more comfortable future for his family.

However, prosperity brings no peace. As the years pass, Marble becomes consumed by fear, suspicion, and guilt. His secret gradually poisons every aspect of his life, affecting his relationships and his sense of self. Forester masterfully explores the psychology of a seemingly ordinary man driven to extraordinary wrongdoing, showing how the burden of concealed guilt can be more destructive than any legal punishment.

Dark, suspenseful, and richly character-driven, Payment Deferred is widely regarded as one of Forester’s finest non-nautical works and an early classic of the psychological thriller, examining the terrible cost of a crime that can never truly be left behind
