Riceyman Steps by Arnold Bennett is a poignant and realistic novel that explores the quiet struggles of ordinary people in post-First World War London. Set in the humble neighborhood surrounding Riceyman Steps, the story centers on Henry Earlforward, a miserly secondhand bookseller whose obsessive devotion to saving money shapes every aspect of his life. When he unexpectedly marries the warm-hearted and practical Violet Arb, their relationship is tested by his relentless frugality and emotional reserve. Around them, Bennett paints a vivid portrait of working-class life, introducing memorable characters whose hopes, disappointments, and daily routines reflect the hardships of the era. Through richly observed details and compassionate storytelling, the novel examines themes of greed, love, sacrifice, loneliness, and the corrosive effects of obsession. Bennett's keen eye for human nature transforms seemingly ordinary lives into a compelling study of character and society. Winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Riceyman Steps remains one of Bennett's finest achievements, offering readers a deeply moving and timeless exploration of the choices that shape both happiness and tragedy.
