Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen is likely set somewhere between 1792 and 1797; it follows the three Dashwood sisters and their widowed mother as they find their way through love, heartbreak, and financial insecurity in Regency England.

When their father’s death leaves them destitute, they are forced to leave the family estate in Sussex and move to a modest cottage on the property of a distant relative in Devon. The two eldest girls (Elinor and Marianne) experience love and heartbreak that tries the contrasting characters of both. Ultimately, they learn to balance passion with practicality to find true happiness in marriage and life.. The novel contrasts Elinor’s reserved feelings with Marianne’s passionate despair, exploring societal expectations and the necessity of combining both Sense and Sensibility for a fulfilling life.

Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English writer known for her novels with their implicit interpretation on the English landed gentry and often explore the dependence of women on marriage to attain social status and economic security.

Austen wrote several major novels before the age of 22, but she remained unpublished until she was 35. The anonymously published Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma were moderate successes, but did not result in fame in her lifetime. She wrote two other novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion—and began another, eventually titled Sanditon, but it was left unfinished on her death.

Since her death Austen’s novels have rarely been out of print. Her works have gradually gained wide acclaim, growing in popular readership and been adapted in numerous films.
