So Big is a Pulitzer Prize–winning novel that tells the story of Selina Peake DeJong, a spirited and intelligent young woman who moves from Chicago to a Dutch farming community after her father’s death. There she marries a struggling farmer and begins a difficult life working the land. Despite hardship and poverty, Selina finds beauty and dignity in honest labor and the natural world. After her husband’s death, she raises her son, Dirk—nicknamed “So Big”—with hopes that he will value creativity, integrity, and meaningful work. As Dirk grows older, however, he pursues wealth and social status in the city, choosing business success over artistic ambition. The novel contrasts Selina’s deep appreciation for life, art, and character with Dirk’s more materialistic outlook. Through their story, Ferber explores themes of perseverance, values, motherhood, and the true meaning of success.

Quote from the book

“About mistakes it's funny. You've got to make your own; and not only that, if you try to keep people from making theirs, they get mad.”
