Set against the shadowy backdrop of late-1920s London cinemas, the story begins when a frightened young box office cashier seeks police protection after becoming entangled with a mysterious criminal gang. Before French can fully unravel her story, she is found dead, and the case quickly expands into a chilling series of murders connected to cinema cashiers across England.
As Inspector French investigates, he uncovers a web of deception, blackmail, gambling schemes, and carefully planned crimes linked by a sinister figure marked with a distinctive purple scar.
