The Celebrated Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County is the first of Mark Twain’s works to receive popular attention, appearing in a New York newspaper in 1865, it was widely republished. The story is a far-fetched tale about a man who will bet on literally anything. He wagers that his frog can out-jump a complete stranger’s frog and the results are rather surprising. In 1867, the tale served as the title entry in Twain’s first book, a collection of short humor pieces.
The book is classic Mark Twain—with a twist. The story of The Celebrated Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County is told in English in Part One. In Part Two, it is translated into French and Part Three is the re-translation of the same story back into English. (Twain’s reason for this is explained in the commentary from the publisher).
Excerpt from the book:
“What might be that you’ve got in the box?”
And Smiley says, sorter indifferent-like, “It might be a parrot, or it might be a canary, maybe, but it ain’t—it’s only just a frog.”
And the feller took it, and looked at it careful, and turned it round this way and that, and says, “H’m—so ’tis. Well, what’s he good for?”
“Well,” Smiley says, easy and careless, “he’s good enough for one thing, I should judge—he can outjump any frog in Calaveras county.”
