The Clue of the New Pin is a classic Golden Age mystery that blends locked-room intrigue with a cast of suspicious characters and hidden motives. First published in 1923, the novel centers on Jesse Trasmere, a reclusive and miserly millionaire who distrusts banks and keeps his vast fortune locked inside his own home.
When Trasmere abruptly leaves his house to avoid a mysterious acquaintance, events take a shocking turn: his body is later discovered inside a sealed vault, apparently impossible to access from the outside. The baffling circumstances of his death immediately cast suspicion on those closest to him, particularly his nephew, Rex Lander, whose extravagant lifestyle depends on his uncle’s wealth.
As the investigation unfolds, journalist Tab Holland becomes entangled in the case, helping to unravel a web of deception involving stolen jewels, secret dealings, and misleading clues. The seemingly trivial “new pin” becomes a crucial detail, guiding the search for the truth.
With its clever plotting, atmospheric tension, and surprising twists, Wallace crafts a compelling puzzle that challenges both detective and reader to uncover the hidden logic behind an apparently impossible crime.
Quote from the book—
“…people with lots of money seldom get hung. You only get hung for wanting money.”
