Catherine Louisa Pirkis (1839–1910) was a British novelist, journalist, and pioneering writer of detective fiction. Born in London, she published her first novel, Disappeared from Her Home, in 1877 and went on to write fourteen novels, along with numerous short stories and articles. She is best remembered for creating Loveday Brooke, a professional female detective whose adventures appeared in The Ludgate Monthly in 1893–94 and were collected as The Experiences of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective in 1894. Pirkis also devoted considerable energy to animal welfare. With her husband, she helped establish the National Canine Defence League, now associated with Dogs Trust.
