Set amid the splendor and peril of King Henry VIII’s court, the novel follows Katharine as she reaches the height of her influence after becoming the king’s fifth wife. Yet the crown that elevates her also places her in grave danger, for Tudor England remains a world of suspicion, political intrigue, and shifting loyalties.
As queen, Katharine strives to preserve her personal integrity and religious convictions while navigating the ambitions of rival courtiers and powerful political figures. Every gesture and every alliance carries enormous consequences, and the precarious nature of royal favor becomes increasingly apparent. Ford portrays Katharine as a complex and sympathetic heroine whose courage and idealism are tested by forces far beyond her control.
