The Four Just Men (1905) is a fast-paced thriller that introduces a secretive group of vigilantes who operate beyond the reach of conventional law. Known only as the “Just Men,” these four wealthy and resourceful figures dedicate themselves to punishing those they believe justice has failed to touch. Their latest target is a British Foreign Secretary determined to pass a controversial bill allowing the extradition of political refugees—a measure the Just Men deem unjust.
After issuing a chilling warning that he must abandon the legislation or face death, the group sets an apparently impossible challenge for the authorities: protect the minister at all costs. Scotland Yard launches an intense effort to thwart the threatened assassination, but the Just Men prove elusive, ingenious, and always one step ahead.
Blending mystery with suspense, Wallace crafts a clever puzzle that keeps readers guessing how the crime could be carried out, while raising provocative questions about justice, morality, and the limits of the law.
Quote from the book—
“You kill for benefit; we kill for justice…”
