The Lazy Detective by George Dilnot is a fast-paced Golden Age mystery that combines police procedure, suspense, and criminal intrigue. The novel follows Detective Inspector Harry Labar of Scotland Yard, a man widely regarded by colleagues and superiors as hopelessly lazy. Beneath his easygoing manner, however, lies a sharp and methodical mind capable of seeing connections that others miss.

When wealthy businessman Solly Gertstein falls victim to a daring theft of valuable jewels and art treasures, Labar finds himself investigating a crime that appears linked to the elusive Larry Hughes, a powerful criminal mastermind who carefully avoids direct involvement in illegal activities. As pressure mounts from Scotland Yard to improve his record, Labar must navigate a web of deception, hidden loyalties, and professional rivalries while gathering enough evidence to expose the untouchable kingpin.

Complicating matters further is Labar’s growing affection for Penelope Noelson, a woman connected to the case whose presence threatens to distract him from his work. Blending clever detective work with lively characters and a touch of romance, The Lazy Detective offers an entertaining portrait of an unconventional investigator proving that intelligence can sometimes accomplish more than relentless effort.

Quote from the book—

“Divisional Detective Inspector Labar was under no illusions about himself. He was lazy.”
