Classic Detective Stories

The Mind of Mr. J. G. Reeder by Edgar Wallace is a collection of eight interlinked detective stories centered on one of Wallace’s most unusual creations. Mr. J. G. Reeder appears at first glance to be a timid, shabby civil servant—an unremarkable clerk in the Department of Public Prosecutions. Yet beneath his mild exterior lies a brilliant and unsettling gift: he possesses what he calls “the mind of a criminal,” allowing him to anticipate the thoughts and actions of wrongdoers with uncanny accuracy.

Across the stories, Reeder is drawn into a variety of complex cases involving fraud, murder, theft, and elaborate criminal schemes. Frequently underestimated by colleagues and suspects alike, he quietly observes, deduces, and ultimately dismantles intricate plots that baffle conventional investigators.

Set against the shadowy backdrop of 1920s London, the collection blends suspense, psychological insight, and moments of dry humor. Reeder’s peculiar personality—nervous, methodical, yet deeply perceptive—gives the stories a distinctive tone. Together, they form a compelling portrait of an unlikely detective whose greatest strength lies in understanding the darker side of human nature.

Quote from the book—

“I have that perversion... It is a terrible misfortune. I see evil in everything. I have the mind of a criminal.”
