The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd a wealthy industrialist Roger Ackroyd is found stabbed to death in his study. His murder occurs not long after the suicide of the widow, Mrs. Ferrars, to whom he was engaged. Before she committed suicide, she confessed to Ackroyd that she had killed her husband. Investigator Hercule Poirot works with the local doctor, James Sheppard, and discovers a tangle of secrets in the house. The case ends with a controversial twist, revealing who the killer is.

The book has been called Agatha Christie’s masterpiece.  In 2013, the British Crime Writers’ Association voted it the best crime novel ever.

The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd is the fourth title in The Poirot Series. The first title in the series, The Mysterious Affair At Styles, launched Christie’s writing career. Christie and her husband subsequently named their house “Styles.” Hercule Poirot would go on to become one of the most famous characters in fiction. Decades later, when Christie told the story of Poirot’s final case in Curtain, she set that novel at Styles as well.

Quote:

“It is odd how, when you have a secret belief of your own which you do not wish to acknowledge, the voicing of it by someone else will rouse you to a fury of denial.”
