Written in 1920, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, is the first Agatha Christie novel and it introduced Hercule Poirot. The small, persnickety inspector is one of her most iconic characters and among the most famous fictional detectives in the world. The story takes place during the years of the Great War, or World War I, on a secluded estate.
The novel details the strychnine poisoning of the wealthy Emily Inglethorp at her country manor, Styles Court, and the subsequent investigation by Hercule Poirot. Through careful analysis and observation, using his sharp deductive skills to examine the intricate web of motives and physical clues, including red herrings designed to mislead the investigation, Poirot meticulously gathers clues, uncovering an ingenious and cleverly concealed method of poisoning, leading to a surprising resolution that reveals the true murderer.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles launched Christie’s writing career. Christie and her husband subsequently named their house “Styles.” Hercule Poirot would go on to become one of the most famous characters in fiction. Decades later, when Christie told the story of Poirot’s final case in Curtain, she set that novel at Styles as well.
