The story begins when Sir William Ponson, a wealthy and respected country gentleman, disappears from his estate, Luce Manor. His body is later discovered in the nearby river beside a damaged boat, and what first appears to be a tragic accident soon develops into a baffling murder investigation.

Inspector Tanner of Scotland Yard is assigned to the case and quickly uncovers a web of suspicious circumstances surrounding the victim’s family, finances, and personal relationships. Several individuals seem to have motives for murder, yet each suspect possesses what appears to be an airtight alibi. As Tanner painstakingly examines train schedules, witness statements, footprints, and overlooked details, the mystery deepens with every revelation.

Crofts’ novel is celebrated for its logical plotting and realistic investigative techniques, offering readers a slow-burning but highly satisfying mystery in which every detail matters.
