Carolyn Keene was not a real person but a fictional name created for the Nancy Drew series. The pseudonym was devised by Edward Stratemeyer, founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, as a way to publish books for young readers under a consistent author identity.

In reality, Carolyn Keene represented a group of writers who contributed to the Nancy Drew Mysteries and The Dana Girls series, both developed by Stratemeyer. The primary author of the original Nancy Drew novels was Mildred Wirt Benson, who wrote most of the early titles and established the series’ distinctive voice. Later, Harriet Adams—Stratemeyer’s daughter—revised many of the original books and oversaw the creation of new titles. Although the name suggests a single author, Carolyn Keene has always been a shared pen name and continues to be used today for modern Nancy Drew titles and spin-off series such as River Heights and The Nancy Drew Notebooks.
