John Buchan (1875–1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian, lawyer, and statesman best known for his adventure and espionage fiction. Born in Perth, Scotland, he studied at the University of Glasgow and Oxford University before beginning a varied career in publishing, law, government, and politics. His most famous novel, The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), introduced the resourceful adventurer Richard Hannay and became a landmark of the thriller genre. Buchan wrote numerous novels, biographies, histories, and essays, including The Power-House, Greenmantle, and Mr. Standfast. In 1935, he became Governor General of Canada, serving until his death in 1940.
