Before purchasing an inheritance, one must first determine exactly when death occurred. That deceptively simple question lies at the heart of this classic mystery featuring the brilliant amateur detective Lord Peter Wimsey. When elderly General Fentiman is discovered sitting peacefully in his favorite chair at the exclusive Bellona Club, no one can say precisely when he died. The uncertainty becomes far more than a medical curiosity, as the timing of his death will decide the fate of a substantial family fortune. Drawn into a web of conflicting testimony, hidden motives, and carefully guarded secrets, Lord Peter must untangle a puzzle where every minute matters. Combining sharp wit, memorable characters, and meticulous detective work, the novel explores themes of honor, family loyalty, and greed against the backdrop of post-First World War England. Rich in atmosphere and intellectual challenge, The Unpleasantness of the Bellona Club is a masterfully constructed Golden Age mystery that rewards readers with ingenious plotting and a satisfying, carefully reasoned solution.
