Presented as a simulated news bulletins interrupting regular programming, it dramatized a Martian invasion with startling realism. Some listeners who tuned in late believed the events were real, sparking reports of public alarm and cementing the broadcast’s place in American media history.

H. G. Wells (1866–1946) was an English writer best known as one of the founders of modern science fiction.
