When Charles the First Was King is a richly detailed historical novel set in Yorkshire during the turbulent years leading up to and encompassing the English Civil War. The story follows Will Dale, a young yeoman farmer whose quiet rural life is disrupted by personal conflict and the growing national crisis. When a local feud escalates and the woman he loves is placed in danger, Will is drawn into a wider struggle that mirrors the divisions tearing England apart.

A loyal supporter of Charles I of England, Will finds himself increasingly at odds with neighbors who favor the Parliamentary cause. As war spreads across the country, battles, shifting allegiances, and political upheaval shape his fate and test his loyalties. Amid the chaos, his personal hopes for love and stability are repeatedly threatened.

Blending romance, adventure, and historical realism, Fletcher paints a vivid portrait of ordinary lives caught in extraordinary times, capturing both the human cost and enduring drama of a nation in conflict.
